Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level names remained functional.
