When the .NET universal top-level extension was initially launched in 1985, along with the first domain name extensions on the World Wide Web, it was planned to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure organizations. Given the fact that there were no particular restrictions about the usage of the top-level extension, though, .NET domains were secured and used for various purposes and by a great number of people. This domain extension is a great substitute of .COM, notably if the desirable domain with the latter TLD is not available for registration.
